Children, seniors and animals are the joy, wisdom, and companionship that enrich my life and the world. I am saddened by the global consciousness of how we dishonor, abuse and neglect our children, elders and animals. Daily we are bombarded by stories, images and news of child sex trade, child labor, elder and animal abuse and neglect. We look and listen in horror then turn our hearts off as easily as we do our remote controls. How do I know this? Look at the proof. America's legislators and local officials continually cut, short change, and turns its congressional back on the needs and necessities that would feed, shelter, and protect our children, elders and pets. We have conceded as a country that to save a bank, legislate congressional pay raises, give more tax breaks to the wealthiest people in our country, and holding on so tight to being right, that it has become alright with the majority of America and the world to stay silent about the pain surrounding us. I am SO sick of it. Aren't you? I have heard all of my life that actions speak louder then words, and people might sometimes believe what you say but they will always believe what you do. What I see is that we are not doing nearly enough. It angers me that we have time to chat, argue and debate political, religious and personal beliefs but get queasy when discussing the despicable condition of how we treat human beings and helpless animals.

I will be advocating and writing about children, seniors and animals throughout this coming year among other issues. I would like to think as a global community we care, but are overwhelmed and don't know what to do. Let me suggest just a few solutions that I have incorporated into my life that speaks truth to power and helps create the change I want so desperately to see. Donate money, volunteer, write, call, tweet, or e-mail legislators and local leaders about funding agencies that do what most of us can not, is a start.

Our treatment and mistreatment of our seniors must change and we are the only ones that can change it. Yes we are our brother and sisters keeper. Medical science allows us to live longer than ever before. I believe that is a good thing because it reflects a life well-lived. We admire, venerate and spend enormous amounts of money on our entertainment icons, sports figures and the rich and famous. How could we have it so wrong? We marginalize our most knowledgeable and wise people, elders. I believe we must respect, honor, encourage, and support them financially and/or materially if possible. But most importantly, make them a vital part of our lives, families and communities. If you are fortunate enough to have a elder in your life, or know of one, STOP and take the time to give them some of your time. It will open your heart and enrich your life. It may be hard to believe that the true key to happiness lies in a open heart. I say to you that an open heart satisfies all the desires, people and external things we spend our lives seeking.

Today, or within the coming month, I am asking that you walk into any assisted living facility for seniors, hospital, or convalescent home near you, and observe firsthand what loneliness, neglect, lack of love and kindness look like. You will not like what you see. Imagine yourself there.

Don't wait for a holiday once a year to show your love. Get off your apathy and be part of the solution to change how we treat our elders.

Roses, candy and presents one day a year mean nothing except making yourself feel good. I want you to consider letting go of the ritual of celebrating holidays on certain days. Everyday is to be celebrated. EVERY life is to be celebrated. Someone needs you today, right now. Give a gift to the planet, to yourself, and to all of us, and give of yourself to a senior NOW.

Please don't wait for Valentine's Day to show up with that card, flowers or visit - do it now because someone needs you.
